Brazilian artist Beatriz Milhazes is known for creating layered abstract works incorporating ornate floral motifs with dynamic, mandala-like designs. Drawing inspiration from a variety of sources, Milhazes looks to indigenous Brazilian and European modernist forms, colonial Baroque designs, 19th-century embroidery and the extravagant costumes and floats of Rio de Janeiro’s Carnivale.

Milhazes's practice includes painting, drawing and collage. “My work is about nature, the changes in nature, its colors—they’re all part of my motivation as an artist,” she says. Milhazes includes Henri Matisse, Piet Mondrian, and Brazilian modernist Tarsila do Amaral as her primary artistic influences.

Milhazes’s works are in the permanent collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; the Museum of Modern Art, New York; Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, Madrid; the Fondation Beyeler, Basel; Le Centre Pompidou, Paris; Tate Modern, London among many others.
