Suzani Embroidery, early-20th century
Uzbekistan
Handwoven raw silk 73 x 84 in.
Suzani, an embroidered and ornamental tribal textile, originates from the Central Asian countries of Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, and Kazakhstan. The term 'Suzani' has its etymological origins in the Persian word سوزن Suzan, which translates as needle. Historically, Suzanis were crafted by Central Asian brides as integral components of their dowry, ceremoniously presented to the groom on the occasion of their wedding. Notable design elements encompass sun and moon disks, floral patterns with an emphasis on tulips, carnations, and irises, as well as depictions of leaves, vines, fruits – particularly pomegranates – along with occasional representations of fish and birds.
