Belgian artist Pierre Alechinsky is recognized for his involvement in the CoBrA art group formed by Danish, Belgian, and Dutch artists including Karel Appel and Asger Jorn between the years 1948 to 1952. The international movement distinguished itself through the creation of bold, expressive compositions inspired by folk and children's art, and the works of Paul Klee and Joan Miró. Members of the group rejected the prevailing geometric constructivist art movements in favor of brightly colored, expressionistic, and experimental imagery.
Alechinsky’s fantastical creatures are inspired by a variety of sources, including Flemish painters Hieronymus Bosch, Pieter Brueghel, and James Ensor, as well as medieval book illustrations, folk art, Japanese calligraphy, and comic books. Although Alechinsky is known for his paintings, poetry, and film, he has concentrated on producing works on paper since the 1960s.
